The Martyn Thompson Collection of War Memorobilia

Martyn is an accomplished scholar, businessman, historian and writer. He owned and operated his own PR and advertising agency for over 30 years.  He has a BA in political science and history from the University of Auckland and a Master’s in communication from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

He is the co-author of the comprehensive history of Auckland International Airport… ‘Where New Zealand Touches the World’ and author of two books on New Zealand military history in WW2. The first one called ‘On Active Service’ came out of the discovery of an old chocolate box in his mother’s cupboard full of letters from his uncle, Owen Gatman who went to the middle east with the first echelon of the 2 NZEF.  Owen fought in Greece and Crete and was killed at Sidi Azeiz Libya in November 1941. Touched by the eloquent writings of his Uncle’s experiences as a soldier at war, Martyn felt it was a story worth preserving. He donated the proceeds of the book to the Owen Gatman Trust which he helped the RNZRSA create.

His research led him to communicate with hundreds of New Zealand veterans who shared their knowledge and stories with him. From his extensive research of New Zealand history, came a second book entitle ‘Our War, The Grim Digs, New Zealand Soldiers in North Africa 1940-1943’.  Martyn is widely regarded as an expert in his field and it is our honour and privilege to present to you today the Martyn Thompson Collection.
